Livin' in Australia - Cairns and north

Italian lifestyle, atmosphere of Spain, feeling in New York. Everybody knows what we are talking about. Getting known a place makes you capable of understanding all the references, jokes, smells, habits, etc. A sense of the culture.

Australia is a huge country with many faces, unbeleivable distances, changing weather, vibrant cities, lonely deserts, rainy rainforests, wavy oceans and short history.

The mistic Black Mountains at Cooktown. The two mountains are covered with big rocks and a type of algae growing on them makes the black color. Many people died on the mountains because the rocks may turn to be instable. The other plusible explanation is that the indigenious spirits are defending the sacred place from illegal visitors.

Our hired 4WD on the road between Cooktown and Laura. Note the typical red rainforest soil. Australia is the oldest continent having 3 to 4 billion years old rocks and soil. This has serious consequences that make Asutralian agriculture costy. This again causes degradation in several ecological areas.

One of the thousands of termite hills in a burnt down bush.

Our 4WD approaches a creek in the rainforest. Big rains change creek and river levels fast that makes the journey fascinating.

A lizard in the restaurant.
